Every movie by this unique, impenetrable director is very challenging and often tests the limits of your patience. Not many viewers, including myself, are able to fathom out what Apichatpong is trying to convey through his medium. The best thing to do when watching his work is to just relax and enjoy the moment. No answer is given, and maybe you do not need to know either. The journey that the director leads you through is captivating. And if you are able to sit through it till the end, the rewards are immense. You might ask the question why, from Mysterious Object at Noon to Syndromes and a Century, every story of this director has to have a scene that takes place in a hospital. And why there is always one scene in the same room with the same chair. I myself cannot answer these questions. All I know is that Apichatpong spent a lot of his childhood in the place, as his parents are both doctors. It might or might not be relevant. You just need to find that out by yourself.

I reckon many people do not yet know this upcoming, talented Thai director but his first feature film "Wonderful Town" has won numerous awards at international film festivals - so far it has won 8 prizes and it has been sold to 21 territories. I have not seen this movie yet and I am dying to see it; please will some foreign distributor buy this film and sell it in DVD format. In the meantime, I just have to make do with its trailer that I happened to come across. From what I see, it looks like the type of movie that I might enjoy: simplistic beauty and serenity.

Originally this movie was scheduled to begin showing nationwide in Thailand on 12 August this year but unfortunately, for some reason, it has been postponed until 9 October. Fans of Nonzee Nimibutr, the director of the movie, will just have to wait for a few more months before being able to appreciate and admire his latest cinematic offering.

From what I gather, it is the biggest project that the director has ever embarked on. It is also a celebration of the 10th anniversary of his movie career as a director. He and his team spent approximately five and a half years producing this epic fantasy. Without a doubt, Queens of Langkasuka is going to be the biggest hit in Thailand. I am sure it will. When I first saw the trailer, I immediately thought of the movie as Pirates of the Caribbean in Thai style. Thank god the story is about a totally different thing. I wanted to describe the background of the story, but it is beyond my ability to translate it into English. I recommend checking this site out as he or she is one of the experts in Thai cinematic scene.

หลังจากไปดูมาที่สยามพารากอนกับเพื่อนกุ่ยในวันพฤหัสที่ผ่านมา(จริงๆมันชื่อปอนด์ครับแต่พวกเราจะเรียกมันว่ากุ่ย) มาครับในโรงหนังวันที่หนังเข้ามีคนไปดูไม่น่าจะถึง 20 คน (ในระยะ 3 วันอันตราย)

เนื้อเรื่องประมาณว่าพระเอกของเรา(อนันดา) ได้รับงานจากนายของเค้าให้ไปถ่ายรูปที่ลาวแล้วบังเอิญเจอไกด์สาว (คำลี่ พีลาวง) เรื่องราวจะเป็นอย่างไรต้องไปหาดูในโรงเอา

เรื่องนี้เป็นการร่วมทุนของไทยกับลาวครับ...ซึ่งต่อไปถ้าหนังแนวนี้ดีๆผมคิดว่าต่อไปจะมีหนังดีๆแบบนี้ออกมาแน่นอนเพราะไม่ต้องไปง้อเจ้าของค่ายหนังดังๆ....(ทั้งๆที่จริงๆแล้วเรื่องนี้เคยไปยื่นหลายๆค่ายแล้วไม่มีใครเอา)

2.เนื้อหาดี (ดูไปไม่ต้องคิดอะไรมากครับนั่งดูสบายๆ...ชิลๆ)

3. ตัดจบแบบนี้ได้ไง.....รับไม่ได้ (ถึงแม้ว่าจะรู้ๆกันอยู่ก็เหอะ)

ที่ไม่อยากจะสปอยล์เพราะหนังมันน่าดูอีกอย่างดูแล้วแบบว่ารู้สึกดี (แนวๆหนังของค่าย GTH)

อย่างน้อยๆคุณดูเรื่องนี้คุณจะรักประเทศลาวอีกเยอะครับ

เรื่องนี้ถ้าทำยอดได้มากผมว่าจะทำได้เพราะปากต่อปากผมเชื่อว่าอย่างงั้น

Apichatpong is undoubtedly the most famous and talented film director Thailand has ever had. He has won numerous awards from abroad, including winning the Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Unfortunately, the Thai Censorship Board does not think so. For quite a while, his latest movie, Syndromes and a Century, has been banned in Thailand although, until recently, it could be shown with the removal of six scenes which the cultural authorities considered taboo for Thai society. Personally I think it is rather sad for Thai movie goers and the Thai public as a whole as they are being denied the basic right to watch whatever they want by some authoritative dingbats. Worst of all, they are not even allowed to think for themselves whether what they see is right or wrong. It sucks, but at least, Apichatpong can just tell these cultural panicky people to get back where they belong as right now he is in Cannes, with other honorable juries to judge some great movies from around the world.

This is the music video of a Thai song called "Yang Noi" (literally translated as "At Least") by Big Ass, a popular Thai rock band. The song is officially featured in the upcoming Thai teen-romantic-comedy flick "Pid Term Yai Hua Jai Wawoon." An unconfirmed official international title of the movie is "Hormones," which implies the unusually high chemical substances in teenagers that cause so many restless activities, especially the feeling of "love." The film will be released in Thailand on March 20th, 2008. I wish I were in Thailand for the press preview of the film earlier next month. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me. I guess I will have to wait for the film to be released in DVD in the near future.

Even though there was a change in the front page of the official website of the film, there is no new content. I guess you have to keep checking back for more updates next month.

P.S. I still wonder what the official English title of the film would be. It would be difficult to convey the literal meaning of "Pid Term Yai" (summer school break) and "Hua Jai Wawoon" (restless hearts) in Thai cultural context to international audiences.

This is a trailer for the latest movie from Songyos "Yong" Sugmakanan, one of the most promising young Thai directors whose previous movie "Dek hor" a.k.a. "Dorm" won him several international and national recognitions including the Crystal Bear from Berlin International Film Festival 2007. His new film "Pid Term Yai Hua Jai Wawoon" (translated litrally in English as "Restless Hearts of Summer Break") seems to be a fine mixture of teenage romantic comedy and road movie as it tells 4 different love stories of different young and restless hearts which are unrelated except the fact that all "love stories" happen in the same time frame during summer school-break - the time when students have chance to explore the world outside of school. Now you could imagine the meaning of the title of the film.

The movie seems to be a reunion of stars from GMM Tai Hub (GTH) company including some new faces. Some cast members have previously worked with the director and starred together in previous successful films namely Charlie "Nak" Trairat and Focus Jirakul from "Fan chan" a.k.a. "My Girl," and Nak and Sirachuch "Michael" Chienthaworn from "Dorm."

The movie is scheduled for Thai cinema nation-wide on March 20, 2008.

หลังจากที่ติดสอบมานานแล้วได้ยินข่าวคราวเกี่ยวกับหนังเรื่องนี้ จากทั้งเพื่อนที่มีทั้งอยากดูเพราะเห็นว่าแปลกหรือไม่อยากดูเลยเพราะขยะแขยง หรือจะเป็นพวกญาติและพ่อแม่ว่าด่าหนังเรื่องนี้ว่าหลอกคนดู ผมจึงอยากดูมากเพราะได้อ่านมาหลายบล็อกว่าเป็นหนังค่อนข้างดี ประกอบกับโดยส่วนตัวก็เป็นกลุ่มคนที่หนังได้อ้างถึง

ผมจึงผ่านเพื่อนผู้หญิงอีกสองคนซึ่งสอบเสร็จมาดๆไปดูหนังเรื่องนี้กัน ตอนซื้อตั๋วที่พารากอนกลัวมากครับว่าหนังจะออกจากโรงแล้ว แต่ปรากฏว่ายังมีเหลืออยู่โรงหนึ่ง มีประมาณห้ารอบได้ รอบของผมอยู่ช่วงบ่ายโมง มีคนไปดูประมาณค่อนโรงได้ คนดูก็มีตั้งแต่คู่หนุ่มสาว กลุ่มหญิงล้วน กลุ่มชาย(แท้)ล้วน และกลุ่มอื่นที่ผมมองไม่เห็น

พอถึงฉากเกิดเหตุ ซึ่งเป็นฉากหนึ่งที่ผมอยากมาดูปฎิกิริยาของคนมาดูมากกว่าฉากในหนังนั้นอีก ก็มีเสียงกรี๊ดเล็กน้อย กับเสียงเสียวๆของกลุ่มชายล้วนข้างๆ ไม่ได้ดังรบกวนการชมหนังมากไปอย่างที่ผมคาด ถึงจุดนี้ผมพอเข้าใจนะ อย่างผมเองเมื่อก่อนก็เสียวเหมือนกัน แต่ผ่านไปสักพักก็ชินเอง คงเป็นเพราะผม(และผมคิดว่าเกย์คนอื่นด้วย)ตั้งแต่เกิดเราถูกปลูกฟังมาให้เห็นความรักแบบชาย-หญิงเป็นสิ่งที่ถูกต้องหนึ่งเดียว เมื่อมาเห็นอะไรแบบนั้นก็รังเกียจ จะอ้วกเหมือนกัน

ฉากที่ผมเริ่มร้องไห้อย่างรุนแรงสุด คือฉากที่สินจัยกินข้าวไข่พะโล้นี่แหละ คือฉากนี้แสดงให้ดูว่าที่หลายวันกบ(ที่แสดงเป็นพ่อของโต้ง) นอนซมไม่ยอมกินข้าวที่สินจัยเอามาเสริฟ์เลย ไอข้าวพะโล้เนี่ยตั้งไว้ตั้งแต่แปดโมงยันเที่ยง พอเที่ยงสินจัยก็เอาข้าวชุดใหม่ร้อนๆมาเปลี่ยน ส่วนไอข้าวพะโล้ที่เย็นและข้าวแข็งแล้วจริงๆ สินจัยก็เอากลับไปกินโดยไม่เอาไปอุ่นเลย ฉากนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าสินจัยพยายามรักษาและเสียสละให้ครอบครัว และรักคุณกบมากแค่ไหนด้วย ที่เธอดุมากๆก่อนหน้านี้ก็เป็นสิ่งจำเป็นทั้งนั้น

ที่ผมมาร้องไห้แรงสุดที่ฉากนี้ คงเป็นเพราะว่าในบางเวลาผมเองก็พยายามที่จะรักษาครอบครัวของผมไว้เหมือนกัน อาจจะไม่ถึงขั้นแบบสินจัย แต่ผมก็เคยกินข้าวค้างแต่ช้าวมาแล้ว และบางครั้งผมพยายามนะที่จะทำเพื่อคนอื่น เพื่อเพื่อน แต่เขาก็ไม่เห็นความดีของผมเลย เขาเหมือนไปเห็นความดีของคนที่เก่งและฉลาดกว่าผมมากกว่า ผมละท้อเลย...

ส่วนฉากที่เกี่ยวกับการต้องจากลาของโต้งและมิว ผมกลับไม่ร้องไห้เท่าไรนัก คงเป็นเพราะผมยังไม่เคยมีแฟนมั้ง แต่ฉากก่อนนี้ที่สินจัยรู้สึกตกใจและตะลึงที่เห็นโต้งกับมิวจูบกัน ฉากที่สินจัยไปคุยกับมิวไม่ให้คบกับโต้งอีกต่อไป ฉากความล่มสลายครั้งที่สองของครอบครัวโต้ง ทั้งหมดนี้มีสิทธิ์เกิดได้จริงทั้งสิ้น หลายคีย์เวิร์ดที่สินจัยพูดกับมิวเป็นสิ่งที่เดียวกับที่เพื่อนผมคนหนึ่งพยายามพูดหักล้างความคิดของผมให้ได้ก่อนหน้านี้

หนังจบแล้ว ผมออกจากโรงมาด้วยความรู้สึกรักและอบอุ่นแบบครอบครัว ทุกตัวละครในหนังพยายามรักษาครอบครัว หรือรักษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างเพื่อนให้ได้ที่สุด ถึงแม้การเลือกตุ๊กตาของโต้งจะเป็นฉากที่แสดงว่าเขายังเลือกทางเดินที่สังคมทั่วไปไม่ยอมรับก็จริง แต่เขาก็หยุดความสัมพันธ์กับมิวไว้ เพื่อรักษาให้ครอบครัวไม่ล่มสลายไปมากกว่านี้ อาจเป็นไปได้ว่าถ้ากบหายดีแล้วโต้งอาจจะรีเทริน์กับมิวก็ได้

ทว่าเมื่อถึงคืนวันนั้น ผมก็เริ่มหลอนกับหนังเรื่องนี้ ฉากและเสียงเพลงในหนังยังคงเวียนอยู่ในหัวผม จากความรู้สึกอบอุ่นเมื่อตอนออกจากโรง กลายเป็นความเหงาอย่างบอกไม่ถูก ฉากกลุ่มเพื่อนของทั้งโต้งและมิวในหนัง ทำให้ผมรู้สึกว่าแม้กระทั่งเพื่อนผมสมัยมัธยมที่ผมสนิทสุดๆแล้ว มาตอนนี้ผมรู้สึกเหินห่างและไม่สนิทเหมือนก่อนเทียบไม่ได้เลยกับความสัมพันธ์ของเพื่อนที่ดูในหนัง เหมือนกับที่เพื่อนของผมเคยพูดว่าควรมีการคุยอย่างเปิดอกกันได้แล้ว

ผมคงต้องชวนเพื่อนไปดูหลายรอบทีเดียวกับหนังเรื่องนี้ อย่างน้อยก็จะได้ระบายความคิดเห็นกันหน่อย บางอย่างมันค่อนข้างกระทบกับผมมากพอสมควร ถ้าไม่แชร์ความเห็นกับคนอื่นผมมีสิทธิ์อกแตกแน่(อันนี้เว่อร์แล้ว)

ทั้งหมดนี้ต้องยกความดีให้ผู้กำกับและนักแสดงทุกคน บทและฉากทุกอย่างลงตัวดีมากครับ แม้กระทั่งเพลง"กันและกัน" ที่ก่อนหน้านี้ผมฟังในรถไฟฟ้าแล้วไม่ชอบมากๆ พอมาโผล่ในหนัง มีน้องมิว(หรือพิช)เป็นคนร้อง ผมก็เคลิ้มไปกับความหมายของมันเลยทีเดียว ผมขอยกให้ "รักแห่งสยาม" เป็นหนังในดวงใจของผมปี 2007 นี้เลยครับ

It does for me.

Anyway, it's actually promoting a Thai movie about a transvestite who falls in love with a cop sent to protect her over some criminal case.

As much as I would have loved to watch it, I ended up catching another Thai movie as this one was not showing yet. It was a bad decision as the other movie sucked totally.

It's an action-comedy film called Kungfu Tootsie - the movie poster looks like a spoof of Stephen Chow's Kungfu Hustler. I probably chose to watch it as I enjoyed the latter very much.

In the end, the poster was the only thing about Kungfu Tootsie to resemble Kungfu Hustle. The storyline was silly and the jokes were lame. It started with a Chinese gang lord getting his hand chopped off due a silly fight. As a result, the gang has to get the gang lord's gay twin brother to stand in for him so as not to let other gangs discover that their gang is now weakened with their leader injured.

A series of lame slapstick jokes followed, some of which made gays seem overly lusty and campy - rather derogatory in nature indeed. It's okay if the treatment was funny, but it wasn't!

Anyway, I somehow managed to survive the whole movie and return to Singapore.

End of Story.
