Public Order officer warns ministry chairman to be ‘careful of your life.’
JAKARTA, September 3

Public Order officer warns ministry chairman to be ‘careful of your life.’

JAKARTA, September 3 (Compass Direct News) – A land dispute led to two attacks on the headquarters of the Indonesian Christian Students’ Movement (GMKI) and its parent ministry, the Alliance of Indonesian Churches (PGI), last week (August 26 and 28).

Sources said an illegal land deal in Jakarta has created the bitter dispute between the GMKI and a private company that claims it has the legal right to build on land previously occupied by GMKI.

GMKI and PGI share an office on the disputed land. Sources said that on August 26 volunteer Public Order officials – who normally mediate local disputes, but who in this case have sided with the private company laying claim to the land, Kencana Indotama Persada Co. (KIP) – threw stones at the Christian organizations’ offices and damaged doors, windows and student motorbikes.

On Thursday (Aug. 28), according to sources, the Public Order officers again attacked the premises, this time using heavy implements to break glass panes and damage other property. Students present fled to a nearby office of the Indonesia Bible Institute (LAI). Policemen standing nearby on the street made no attempt to intervene.

Mysterious Appropriation

The disputed property is a large piece of land originally granted by the Dutch colonial government to the Vereneging Christian School (VCS) Foundation. The VCS then gave the land to the Christian School Association, which in turn passed it on to a branch of its own association, the Christian Education Foundation (YBPK).

Although occupied by many Christian ministries and associations, including the Christian University of Indonesia and LAI, sources said the land belonged to YBPK.

Under the terms of the land grant, the land could not legally be sold to business entities, according to GMKI lawyer Nikson Lalu. In August 2006, however, a board member of YBPK, acting independently of the board, sold a small plot of land to KIP. An old office belonging to GMKI was still standing on the plot of land, adjacent to a newer building shared by GMKI and PGI.

Compass sources noted that a gas station and business offices had replaced other ministry offices on the granted land. It was not clear, however, how the businesses had appropriated the land from YBPK.

Dispute Escalates

Sources said that on August 23, at around 5 p.m., Public Order officer Simanjuntak, who has only a single name, visited the GMKI office and informed staff members that a boundary wall would be built between their current building and the old building, which was now considered the property of KIP.

KIP then erected a boundary wall between the two buildings, sources said, and KIP construction workers also used a bulldozer to partially demolish the old GMKI office despite protests from GMKI Chairman Charles Hutahaean. On August 26, GMKI students demolished the boundary wall that KIP had erected.

GMKI had filed a complaint against KIP in the district court, according to sources, but the court ruled in favor of KIP. GMKI’s lawyer then took the case to the Supreme Court, which at press time had yet to announce a decision.

Sources said that KIP claimed it had a previous letter of decision from the Supreme Court stating that KIP was the owner of the disputed land, despite the fact that the land could not legally be sold to a business enterprise.

A day before the first attack, Public Order officers had a confrontation with GMKI students. On August 25, Public Order officers noted that GMKI students had erected a banner inside their own boundary fence, facing the street, protesting against a new bylaw forbidding the sale of fruit, cigarettes and other goods by street vendors in the area.

When officers tried to remove the banner, according to sources, the students protested, claiming that since the banner was on their own property, they did not require a permit from the district office to display it.

Attacks, Threat

At around 4 p.m. on August 26, a large group of Public Order officers returned to the shared GMKI and PGI premises and began to throw stones at the building, breaking glass window and door panes and damaging motorbikes owned by GMKI students.

Sources said the students threw stones back at the officers, who then scaled the fence and tried to break into the PGI building itself; a PGI security guard managed to stop them.

The following day, Jakarta Vice-Governor Prijanto, who has only a single name, met with PGI Chairman Andreas Yewangoe and other PGI leaders. He apologized for the disturbance and promised compensation for the damaged property.

Additionally, Engkartiasto Lukito of the Golkar party and Ara Sirait of the Indonesian Democratic Struggle Party (PdiP) came to offer condolences, as did Hasyim Muzadi, leader of Nahdatul Ulama, the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia.

Nevertheless, on Thursday (Aug. 28), Public Order officers returned to carry out the second attack.

A Public Order officer involved in the dispute also warned GMKI Chairman Hutahaean to be “careful with your life.”

Compass sources explained that Public Order officers would likely benefit financially from protecting the business interests of KIP.

KIP construction workers on Friday (August 29) erected a sign on the disputed plot of land adjacent to the GMKI and PGI building, declaring that the land belonged to KIP.

Report from Compass Direct News

Control = I/E

I/E + P = E/I

E/I + T = I/E

I/E = Control

This formula means that control is equal to intellect over emotions. Thus, we are in control when our intellect rules our emotions. When you add problem 'P' to the equation, thnkgs turn around in a negative manner and YOU lose control over your duties. However, if emotions are in control of you, training 'T' will turn things around in a positive manner and you gain control. So, to be a sucessful security officer or police officer, your intellect needs to be over your emotions, so that way, you still have control and are not the one being played like a puppet.

Also, if you are threatened with a knife, DO NOT block with your hands. This leaves your blood vessels and tendons in your hands and wrists to be sliced and will disable you. If that happens, you are fighting a losing battle with the suspect. You need to find cover or any type of weapon you can get a hold of, if you are an unarmed officer, to disarm and arrest the suspect.

“What I find is that people say ‘great you’re in the cops’ and they’re so excited, and you hear other cops saying ‘yeah it’s great’, but they neglect to tell you what it’s really, really like.”

Senior Constable Jones has been a police officer for six and a half years. We’ve had lunch and now she’s driving me back to the train station.

She knows I’m writing this article, and looks at me, concerned. “I don’t want to be so negative.” She turns back to the road. “I think a lot of people join thinking it’s very glamorous, and because it’s an authority type of work. I didn’t join for that reason.”

So why did you join? “I was in a long-term relationship, we were barely making ends meet. I thought it was my turn to put something into the relationship, keep up my end of the bargain. I also wanted to do something with my life. I felt just being a housewife I wasn’t appreciated, and I also wanted to do something that would help people.” So SC Jones went to Charles Sturt University and undertook a Bachelor of Justice Studies (Policing).

Does she enjoy being a copper? “Yes and no.” What does she enjoy?

For a while she stares out the window, silent. “When you actually know you can help someone. Once, I went out to a domestic violence incident and helped this woman, and she called me a few months later to thank me. I was very taken back by that – very surprised by it – but it gave me a good feeling that I had helped.”

That must have been nice to hear. She nods. “But you usually get abused.” Is this what you don’t like about the job? Again, she nods. “The paperwork, the long hours, but – yeah – the lack of thanks. Not that you do it so people go, oh you’ve done a great job, but you get a phone call and just expect it to be complaining complaining complaining, but instead there’s someone saying ‘you came to my house a few months ago and you really helped me and I want to thank you so much.’ It’s nice to know that you’re appreciated.”

Suddenly SC Jones laughs. ‘Coppers have feelings too, you know.”

We stop at the lights. I’m about to ask another question when she again turns to me, serious. “You have so much to give to other people, and you can help them because you in that position, but it always falls on deaf ears and you never know what happens to that person. So when they ring it’s just really nice.”

I ask how hard is it to take off the belt, go home and just be Ms Jones.

“You have days off but it’s so hard to unwind. It just feels like you are always at work. You’ve got the people that you meet when you’re off duty and they say ‘what you do for a job?’ and you tell them and they immediately change, they’re not themselves, and you think: Ahh... this sucks!”

Well, I tell her, I’m gonna go and hug the first copper I see.

PC Jones laughs again, this time much longer. “You may need to ring me so I can come and bail you out.”

Although my work as a Salvation Army officer (pastor) is a calling and vocation that I find fulfilling, it has aspects that are common to everyone - things that we all have to do! It's never easy coming back to work after a holiday! First, it's hard to switch back to work mode! Second, you don't know where to start! And third, there's a mountain of post and emails to attend to! How do you deal with this problem? Put the coffee on?

This was the scene that confronted me when I arrived back in the office! And if that wasn't enough, there was note to pick something up from Royal Mail because the sender hadn't paid enough postage! There's an excess to pay, and the last time that happened it was what I considered junk mail! Welcome back!

There’s a belief that within the city of Lhasa, there are more undercover agents than there ar

There's a belief that within the city of Lhasa, there are more undercover agents than there are uniformed police. The man in green truly believed this was the case, being an undercover officer himself. It wasn't the elaborate life of secrecy he had imagine. In fact, it felt more like he was the errand boy for people he sought out to become. Seeking out foreigners and following them closely with a band of others. The type of position that gets little reward or recognition from the agency he's worked so hard and proud for. During the current years, it's been the great pay and benefits that kept him in the outfit. But the long and elusive promotion had been waning in his thoughts. Ambition was almost all but forgotten. That is, until the three unregistered foreigners entered the city.

"That sounds so strange," Wanami concluded after hearing Fairfax's story on last night.

"We probably looked like team of special agents trying to weed out any treacherous thoughts and activities."

"In any case, I think we should find a different place."

"One step ahead of you. I went out this morning and found a place." Fairfax chose to be brief and the others knew this was enough information. "Gather your things."

The three set out into the side streets once again. There were no vendor stalls through these streets. Only one or two were spotted, but they sold street food and was definitely not targeting tourist tastes. Gelataneous mounds sat wobbling on the vendor stall as people came to order. A simple potato peeler was used to carve out noodles strands from the mound into a bowl. A very unappealing sight at first, but the end product looks like your usual noodles, garnished with chili peppers and green onions.

Being inconspicuous in this part of town was going to be difficult. Every stranger the three passed gave them wide eyed stares as they trekked on by with their large backpacks. Above their heads were mounted security cameras. They weren't the type that were attached to one building providing surveillance for just the property owner. These were definitely installed by the city as the base of the camera was position on a high beam secured between two buildings. A closer look will also reveal that the cameras had night vision capabilities. The sight of the cameras brought serious doubt in their attempt to hide.

"Are you sure about this place?" asked Wanami.

"Yes, don't worry about those. There aren't any after the first few turns." Fairfax continued turning through the streets.

"How did you find this place?"

"It was a long morning."

"Long indeed. The lady at the previous guest house kept asking me where we were going and staying."

"Really? What did you say."

"Played dumb of course. I just said we were finding out during lunch."

Quinn walked along behind them thinking to himself. Being off the surveillance grid was ideal. He had to find a small village not far from this town. Directions printed out from his email showed exactly how to get there. However, he needed Wanami and Fairfax's help to get there. The names were in Chinese. He could hand the driver the directions but once he gets to the village, it would be a different story. His old friend who canceled on him was glad to help. But he wasn't sure about how the two would feel about him if he told him the true story why he was there. A problem he had difficulty in solving. However, this paled in comparison with the other problem mounting.

Back at the previous guest house, the man in green arrived with company. A short conversation with the owner told him that the three knew he was coming. To him, fleeing was an admission of guilt. But the penalty of entering Lhasa without a permit only meant deportation. What else could be the reason to avoid the inevitable fate. Now this was getting interesting for him. Refueled by ambition and determination, he was set on finding out. It wasn't going to be hard tracking down a foreigner here, now. The problem was how he's going to do it without someone else taking all the glory. There was no need in assembling a large team. Just help from the military was all that's needed. The police would only take over and pin another on the chief. This time, he will handle everything. They were just kids. And these kids got by the police and are walking right under the military presence. An arrogant gesture to the authorities. He was determined to follow this to the end.

The new guest house Fairfax had found sat far back form the main street of Beijing Road. It wasn't even advertised as an opened guest house. Fairfax stumbled upon it during his exploration in the back side streets. The only thing that led him inside the plain building was an elderly man trying to pull in a hand truck full of drinks. When Fairfax gave him a helping hand inside, he noticed the building was setting to open up. However, in talking with the owner, he found out they were taking their time. Upon hearing entry to Lhasa was closed to foreigners, there was no rush to open. The rooms were set up to meet Western standards and the prices would drive away non-foreigners. With little convincing, Fairfax secured a room after hearing they weren't requiring any paperwork. In fact, they were oblivious to the requirement because they weren't officially established. A very fortunate coincidence for the three.

"Nice." Wanami commented as she walked into the room.

"And we can take the side streets all the way to the palace to avoid those guard posts."

"Good work! I so don't like it here, we need to get out of the city."

"I agree. Travel agent?"

"Yes. But first, we need to have you blend in some how."

Quinn dropped his bag on the bed, "You can start by ditching that college t-shirt."

To get something out of the way first for all of you who keep asking, and wondering, etc etc. Yes, I

To get something out of the way first for all of you who keep asking, and wondering, etc etc. Yes, I have a full time job, I was hired this past Friday at Wal-Mart in Highland. I'm just doing warehouse stuff, nothing super exciting but it's a job for now.

So I was talking with my parents the other night about careers, salaries, marriage, family, etc. How much is needed to have a house and support others as a man these days. It got me thinking more about where I'm needing to go from here and such. I jumped on Google for a bit before I went to bed and found that there are currently openings at SIUE for police officers. HOOZAH! This is precisely the field I'm trying to get into. The best part? They don't require you to have a college degree for entry level. You simply have to:

be 21

have a high school diploma

pass the physicals

pass all the course work and exams

complete and pass the firearms course to carry a firearm

So I read all the info and found two different job postings. One said the deadline was today by 4pm, and the other stated the deadline was this Friday at 3pm. So I called up to SIUE and checked.. hoozah again, it's not till this Friday. So I went ahead and downloaded the (many) forms needed to apply and I've gotten most of them done. It's not a bad paying job, and I'll already be in the field I desire to be. Entry level salary is 35k a year. Not the greatest, but definitely not the worst. It is enough to support a wife on as well as myself and gets me seriuosly thinking about if this is the direction God has for me to go. If I do get this job I will be starting my actual career, and I can continue going to school at SIUE for law enforcement and only up my salary. With the experience I get I can apply at a local, county, or federal police department with my degree and go on from there. It's a perfect (in my mind) plan. I just wonder if God agrees. This would jump start me into life providing funds for school, the possibility of marriage, and experience I'll need for the rest of my life.

I need you guys to pray with me on this. I'm gonna go up tomorrow or Wednesday and put in my application, and register for the exams and physical. God willing my life (as far as career goes) may be starting sooner than I'd dreamed.
