I'm trying to learn more about graphic design, which I am not so great at. I have gotten some of the Sams Teach Yourself books, but it's tough to find the self-discipline at times to do it. I found the graphics.com site, which offers some pretty cool classes on how to do graphics and layouts. There's a fee, but if you're one of those fancy people with a budget for education and stuff, why not do it? Librarians need this stuff. Have you seen the covers of most library science text books? Hideous. And how much longer can we withstand newsletters in neon colors?

In other news, I've been trying to learn about Drupal which I think will end up being lumped into the same category as Greenstone, Linux, Delicious and Koha. That category being the one that is "I'd like to try it, download it, learn more about it, finally implement it or become somewhat decent at understanding and using it but I've got shit to do and I know there are people way better at it then me, so they can have at it and help me out in a pinch".

At CML, we are beginning the long, arduous process of transitioning our sites to Drupal. Long-term, am I happy about this? Yes. Short-term? OMG Drupal is going to drive me to drink!!! I don't even really know what to ask nor what to look for. Development of a skeleton of our site is coming along quite well, but I'm still in the dark.

Here's the problem: I'm not a developer/programmer/web designer. But, as my non-techie husband fondly calls it, I'm certainly no World W Internets dummy either. I am stuck in the tragic middle. And where is the peer group for that? I'm having trouble finding one. Forget about finding a group like this that also has a library bend. (I almost typed "liberal" instead of "library" there...politics on the brain much?) Grrrrr.

I think part of the problem is that because I work for a large, urban public library, my job is so specialized. Consequently, I haven't had as many happy accident opportunities as I would like. Never out of necessity have I had to learn programming, web design, etc. I am like the doctorate person who knows "everything about nothing" but I don't have the cool letters at the end of my name. And as far as I know, there aren't any other large, urban public libraries using Drupal. Again, where's my peer group?

I'm hoping that help will come from my own backyard. Along with one of my colleagues who actually does do programming, we are going to pick the brains of the IT team at one of our partner libraries. They're small, but they're local! Their soon-to-be new site is built in Drupal.

Maybe by the time I've crested the huge learning curve, I will be able to pioneer the creation of a peer group that focuses on Drupal for non-developers/non-programmers/non-librarians/yet not a stranger to technology by any means in library settings. First, I'll need to work on a better name for such a group.

Hmm, let’s see. I’ve been working a lot lately trying to get my company off the ground

Hmm, let's see. I've been working a lot lately trying to get my company off the ground. I am currently working on a huge project for a mortgage/real estate company. The site is called SikkU and it's a real estate listing site.

It's pretty cool. The one thing that I did for this site (which I've been working on for the last 10 months) that I never thought I would be doing is developing in .NET and an open source CMS/Framework called DotNetNuke. The tools available make developing on this platform very easy, but it also complicates things a bit. Either way, I feel very comfortable working with it and have even started coming up with ideas on different modules that I could build and maybe monetize.

Of course, my preference has always been to use open source tools and software to run my company. So even though I have been developing with Microsoft's tools (and have become very proficient at it) I am still trying to further my understanding of PHP and Drupal. I ultimately want to be able to say that I can work on both .NET/DotNetNuke and PHP/Drupal. This type of versatility would greatly increase my chances to get more projects and would just make things more fun, I think.

I am also trying to get my music online, I even got a MySpace for my band which right now has nothing in it. I've just haven't had time, but soon I will be laying down some tracks and uploading them to the site.

Tested on: Drupal 5.x

Tested on: Drupal 5.x
Scenario: you have some content types with some attachments you want to protect or restrict to certain users (e.g. authenticated vs. anonymous).

Private Upload is the right module to do the job. According to starbow, "the files are only as private as the nodes they are attached to". In other words, Private Upload inherits the access restrictions from the "parent" node.

After you flag an attached file as "private", it will be publicly downloadable by anonymous users if "parent" node is available to anonymous users. But if that node is available only to authenticated users, as anonymous you'll get a "403: Forbidden" error if you try to download it.

If you want a tailored solution beyond standard access control provided by Core modules, you can combine Private Upload with other node access control modules:

Node Access restrict by node

Content Access restrict by content type

I use both on different websites. Remember: Private Uploads inherits access restriction from parent node, so using these module you can automatically allow or deny to specific user roles to dowload the attachment on specific nodes (node by node with Node Access, globally for a content type with Content Access). But remember to flag each attachment as private!

The drupal_goto() drupal function (all 4.x-7.x) can be useful in many situations, here a simple example to place in your template.php theme file.

function conditional_user_goto() {
	$output = '';
	global $user;
	if (in_array('authenticated user', array_values($user->roles))) {
		$path = 'user/' . $user->uid . '/some/user/based/link';
		drupal_goto($path);
	}
	else {
		$output = t('<a href="@login">Login</a> or <a href="@register">register</a> to Some User Based Action.',
            array('@login' => url('user/login', 'destination=alerting'),
            '@register' => url('user/register', 'destination=alerting')));
	}
	return $output;
}

Using print conditional_user_goto(); somewhere in your code (e.g. within a PHP block) will display a link to some user page (e.g. user page itself, tracks or subscription interface) to authenticated users, and a translatable "Login or register" message to anonymous users (I take this code from Job Posting module).

I'm using IE as a default browser and I'm honestly encountering problems when I'm browsing a site.. suddenly when I close a window, a popup message will appear.. "Referenced memory at 0x021767868. The memory could not be read" (something like that) ..I've searched over the forums to find an answer and all I got is this.. "The reason is because of Anti-spyware or Firewall installed in PC" (That was a big 'Duh...' coz I don't even have antispyware installed and the firewall that I'm using is the default WIN XP firewall ..so how could that happen??? ..my antivirus??? no idea..) ..Then I switch to Mozilla Firefox.. It works fine but I feel it uses a lot of PC memory so it makes other processes run slower.. Now i just saw this Google Chrome Beta.. I try to use it.. and somehow it works fine.. ;)

I finally got the Studio Ten Four website live. It feels good to have that up. I've been doing freelance work for a while and never got around to making my own website. It feels more legit to have that up there so I can point people to that. I need to make the business cards now!

I'm slowly getting back into work mode now. I still have some work to do for my clients and have some ideas to try and gain some new clients. I also have a few side projects that are pretty fun to work on, which I will announce if I ever actually complete them.

I'm also having fun learning Drupal. The Studio Ten Four site is running Drupal. It's so much cleaner than Dot Net Nuke. It is taking a while to learn, but I remember Dot Net Nuke taking a while to learn too. So far I'm very happy with Drupal and I'm excited about the switch. The community is awesome too, which is a huge plus. I didn't modify the Drupal core framework once in making the site. However in DotNetNuke, there are some things that you can't do without modifying the core. I may take this blog off of Wordpress and manage it with Drupal instead, I haven't decided yet. I do want to redesign this blog though. This design is just one of the free templates from Wordpress.com.

I bought a sketchbook about two weeks ago. Being surrounded by other artists and awesome drawings all the time inspired me to learn to draw better. I am hoping that it will help me visualize things first when designing things. My sketches look like a kindergardener's drawings. But here are a few pictures from the first few pages of my sketch book. Believe it or not, these are some of the "better" sketches....hey you gotta start somewhere. =)
