Sox ink first-rounder Kelly, second-rounder Gibson

This is a day of good news for the Red Sox. In addition to Papi's good showing at Pawtucket, the Sox announced that they have signed 18-year old shortstop-pitcher Casey Kelly out of Sarasota, FL, their number one draft pick this season. He had signed a letter of intent to quarterback at the University of Tennessee, but the Sox "volunteered" enough dollars and opportunity to make this happen, as expected.

Kelly will join the Gulf Coast Rookie League team. As per his wishes, they will start by trying him out at shortstop, but he's also seen as a pretty good pitching prospect as well, so we'll see. It's up to how well his bat plays.

The Sox also signed their second-rounder today, Derrik Gibson out of Delaware. He is another athletic, multi-talented player.

Looking to pick up where they left off last year, Team Fwet is officially the first team to get their dues in. As you may or may be aware, Fwet won an unprecedented third league championship and they now appear primed to nab the first pick in the draft.

Another team has a payment pending at this point, but I do not count it until I have officially received it in my PayPal account. I'll not name the team until it becomes official in a day or so, but right now it appears that the top two slots are taken. Don't be the last to get your money in!

UPDATE 7-19: A team just beat the "pending team" mentioned above - the Dumb F'ing Cows! So they take the #2 slot away from "pending". Tough break.

Welcome to the inaugural 200 Tacos Draft of Everything $100 or Less in the Universe!

So, after numerous flakes and snafus our inaugural 200 Tacos Draft of Everything $100 or Less in the Universe is set to begin on Monday! Needless to say, we're hoping for the best, but definitely expecting the worst. To get this debacle started, we're going to establish the basic ground rules.

The draft will go for three rounds, which means each participant will make a total of three picks, one per round. At the end of the draft, we'll have a post that lists everyone's picks to determine a reader through comment voting. This post will be located under the "Pages" section for your reference.

We'll keep a running draft summary of everyone's picks! Here are the rules for posting your selections:

1. Each participant will have 24 hours to select their pick of any item or combination of items for a total amount of $100 or less.

2. Participants must include a short description of their selection, and proof of the price to show that they aren't making it up.

3. Contrary to our other posts on this site, participants do not need to write a long-winded summary. A sentence or two is fine, but more power to you if you want to "spit hot fire."

That's it! Here's the order decided through a process of dice-roll eliminations! Late additions (hopefully!) will be added to the end of the draft order.

Vietnam vetoes draft resolution on Zimbabwe

Vietnam that holds the presidency of the 15-member UN Security Council in July voted against a draft resolution proposing sanctions on Zimbabwe .

China and Russia , the council’s permanent members, and two other non-permanent members, South Africa and Libya , also vetoed the draft resolution, while Indonesia abstained in the July 11 UNSC session.

With the veto of both China and Russia , the council failed to adopt the draft resolution in the meeting which was chaired by Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UNSC.

Speaking prior to the vote, Ambassador Minh stated that Vietnam shares the deep concerns about the current instability, violence and political impasse in Zimbabwe which are having an adverse impact on the life of the people of Zimbabwe .

Vietnam supports the mediation efforts by the African Union (AU), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and South African President Thabo Mbeki in implementation of the resolution adopted recently by the AU Summit in Sharm-el-Sheik with a view to enabling the parties concerned in Zimbabwe to reach a mutually acceptable solution in a spirit of placing the interests of the people of Zimbabwe above all, thereby contributing to the restoration and consolidation of peace, security and stability not only in Zimbabwe but also in the region.

“We are pleased to see that with the good offices efforts led by South African President Thabo Mbeki, the parties concerned in Zimbabwe are engaging in dialogue and negotiations towards this end,” he added.

The diplomat went on to say Vietnam is of the view that the situation prevailing there does not constitute a threat to regional or international peace and security.

“This view is shared not only by regional countries, especially the next-door neighbours of Zimbabwe but also by most of the member states of the United Nations,” Minh said, adding that “Therefore, Vietnam holds that the situation in Zimbabwe at present is not within the mandated purview of the Security Council.”

The ambassador noted subjecting Zimbabwe to Charter VII sanctions for its present situation is of serious concern for the fact that the proposed sanctions measures would not only fail to facilitate the efforts in finding a solution to the situation in Zimbabwe, especially those made by the AU and SADC, but also set a dangerous precedent for intervention in the internal affairs of sovereign states and run counter to the fundamental principles of international laws and the Charter of the United Nations.

“For all these reasons, Vietnam cannot support the draft resolution,” the representative emphasised.

As a member of the UNSC, Vietnam always tries its best to improve the council’s operation efficiency, Minh told international reporters after the meeting.

The ambassador stressed that the UNSC as well as the UN only operate effectively when they abide the fundamental principles of international laws, the UN Charter and their functions.-

Jazz Sign Koufos

In what will probably be the most exciting story for the Jazz this off-season, the Jazz have signed rookie Kosta Koufos to a contract. He was selected #23 overall in the draft, and is yet another "big" for the Jazz to leave on the bench/in the NBDL while playing guys that shouldn't be playing. But that's what the Jazz are good at...

Koufos should be playing the RMR, which starts next Friday.

I'm not too worried that the top picks haven't signed yet. If you look at last year, Bumgarner and Fairley were both signed in August and Alderson signed in late July. One reason for these late signings may be Ned Coletti's departure as he was reportedly the executive in charge of contract negotiations. It is more likely, however, that players are taking longer to sign because more money is being negotiated. This year even supplemental first rounders are receiving seven figure signing bonuses. I'll be more concerned if the top four don't sign by August 1st.

PM approves draft agreement on Vietnam-Cambodia visa exemption

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on July 4 approved the content of a draft agreement on visa exemption for holders of general passport between the Vietnamese and Cambodian government.

According to the Government website, The PM entrusted the Foreign Ministry with the negotiation and signing of the agreement with the Cambodian government.

At the fourth conference on cooperation and development between border provinces of Vietnam and Cambodia in Preak Sihanouk city, Cambodia on Feb. 28, 3008, the two sides agreed to launch as soon as possible negotiations for the signing of the agreement on visa exemption for holders of general passports.-

VS: Our 1st Marvel Universe Draft

Last Saturday, we were able to draft Marvel Universe. I nearly was late for the action as i was catching the mark out moment the IWC peeps have been talking about in Monday Night RAW. As Jerry Lawler said, "CM Punk WINS!, CM Punk WINS! CM Punk WINS!", one of the better written scripts in wrestling as of late. Well Monday Night Raw started an hour later than usual, so i got to Xtended Play (our local VS hub) around 830pm.

Well, one our players, Andrew "spooky" Francisco was gracious enough to have not mixed his cards from a box he ordered over the internet (it cost around $100 to be shipped to us). And Dennis "Lost" Ching was nice enough to give me his seat in the pod. Everyone was set and people's dreams of drafting Avengers, SHIELD, Warbound and Crimelords was swelling up. Woo-hoo.

Finished a complete first draft last night after a minor change from bobby brown to ray parker jnr (you can guess the reference no?). Now off to Memphis for a week. Intention is to read it there once, twice and then I have a week to make changes before submission to TWP on time (yes!!) 1st August. And then it's off not looking or writing for two weeks (will allow myself to make notepad notes but no computers)

Enjoyed it as ever and produced something that I think it has lots of strong moments, strong characters and when actors/readers/theatre practitioners get to see it, the strengths will be strengthened and the weaknesses whittled away. The David Freeman or here techniques proved useful and interesting as a start point to jump off from.

2008 Season is looming

Yes, it's that time of year again when the Commish gets woken with air horns, prodded out of bed with sharp sticks, and led to the computer with the scent of pop-tarts so he can check countless forgotten email accounts and text messages asking 'When is the draft ?', 'Where is the Keeper List ?', 'Are you still alive ?', etc...

Out with the old...

The league has lost two of its original franchises in the off-season. Both Morning Wood and Dookie have decided to retire after ten years of going head-to-head as the winningest teams in league history. Dookie leads regular season wins by one victory, while Morning Wood leads the overall wins by one game. I have also heard that Brewmasters will not be returning after their three sesons of competition.

In with the new...

The Commish of course has kept the lines open for interested new ownership and has all three teams ready to taken over for the season - I just don't know which new owner is going to get which old team yet - actual CA$H being received in the TBFL coffers will determine who picks which open team first.

Communication is the key to success...

Well that and avoiding the injury bug. The Commish realized this weekend when he started putting all the tools together for the 2008 season that alot (read MOST) of the layout files needed are trapped on his Roadrunner account that he no longer has access to because he switched the TBFL hedaquarters over to Verizon FiOS in the off season. Thus, this new blog was born. I'll be getting the generic www.tbfl.net address to point over to this blog tonight or tommorrow, and once I learn a bit more about Wordpress, I'll pretty it up and have permalinks to the actual league pages over at myfantasyleague.com.

For those that are in the information age, you can set your RSS reader to monitor this blog for new posts and updates till everything is rolling on the main league page, and for updates in future off seasons.

Now that Baby is a little older and under control, I'm going to try for the modest goal of 500 words a day. My men are starting to bond, and my women are starting to bond, so I'm going to have to be careful to keep the men from bonding with the women or else it's going to get very boring, very quickly.

Today, Woman asked to see the draft when it's done, which only served to remind me once more how very not done it is. Lovely.

I'm building to the next big revelation which is supposed to happen around 55k words. Hopefully I can keep on top of all my characters. May the GRRM force be with me!

2008 MLB Draft - Signing News

It's been a little over a month since the MLB first year player draft, and there have been a hand full of signings since the completion of the draft. Below is a list of draft position, the player's name, parent team, and minor league team. Since Tim Beckham signed with Razor, and who knows when we'll see a card or autograph from him. In the meantime, you can write him care of his minor league team, cross your fingers and hope for an autograph. Speaking of which (big plug here) go to the Autograph Card Store and buy some cards to send through the mail to sign. Remember buy your first pack and receive some bad wax, after purchasing it, send Rusty a email at info@theautographcard.com and tell him you bought it through BadWax. He'll email me and we'll get your bad wax out to you. So far only one person took me up on this. So I still am offering 9 more bad wax packages to the next nine people.

Diary of a Fantasy Football Dynasty League Part 2

Ok, so it has been a while since I last wrote. There has been a lot going on since my last post, so I will fill everyone in.

We had our very first league meeting in April. I wanted to hold this meeting for several reasons. First, I wanted to everyone to meet each other in person. Second, and probably most important, I wanted to go over rules and regulations. And third, we drew for draft position and also drew for which conference teams would be in.

I will fill you in on details about the the rules and regulations. In my last post I filled you in on what I wanted to happen and the way I thought things would go. First, I must say I went into this meeting prepared by creating an outline. I think this kept everything organized and also gave everyone a description and an agenda for the meeting. We covered everything from the draft to payouts. Keep in mind our goal is to keep this as close to the NFL as possible. Here are the official rules:

Draft:

12 teams- 2 Divisions (AFC & NFC)

25 Round, Serpentine Draft

Salary Cap:

The salary cap will not take affect until 2009 (2nd year). We will use the previous years Cap Value as shown on USA Today NFL Players Salary. Starting next year, we will take the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th team with the highest salary and use that as our salary cap. We will have a league vote to determine the cap. Then in the subsequent years, we will use whatever percentage the NFL raises their by as our gauge to increase our cap number.

Defensive Team Value:

Since our league is not using IDP (Individual Defensive Players), we had to determine how Defense/Special Teams would count towards the cap. After a discussion, we decided to multiply the total number of fantasy points from the previous year by 20,000. For example: if the Chargers scored 130 fantasy points last year, their salary cap value would be $2,600,000.

Rosters:

25 active player roster. Teams must carry 25 players at all times.

Initially I had 1 injured reserve spot, but after discussion, we decided to change that to unlimited IR spots but the players that are on IR still count towards the salary cap.

Free Agents:

All undrafted players and released players will go in the Free Agent Pool.

Free agents will be locked down until Thursday mornings. All pickups must go through the commissioner. In case of two or more teams picking up the same player, the team with the lowest point total will receive the free agent.

In order to pick up a free agent you must clear room on your roster AND must remain under the salary cap.

Trades:

Trade deadline is before week 9.

All trades will go through, but will be looked over by the commissioner. If a trade is deemed unfair, the commissioner will ask the VP for his approval.

All trades that are made must adhere to the salary cap limitations.

Teams are allowed to trade future draft picks.

Scoring:

0.04 points per passing yard (1 point per 25 yards)

0.1 points per rushing/receiving yard (1 point per 10 yards)

6 points per Touchdown

-1 point per interception thrown or fumble lost

2 points per 2-point conversion

Defensive Points:

1 point per sack/interception/fumble recovery

6 points per defensive/special team touchdown

Kickers:

1 point per extra point

3 points per FG 0-29 yards

4 points per FG 30-39 yards

5 points er FG 40-49 yards

6 points per FG 50+ yards

Playoffs:

There will be 6 playoff spots.

The top team in each conference will receive a bye. Then the then the 3 seed will play the 6 seed and the 4 seed will play the 5 seed, regardless of conference. In round two, the lowest remaining seed will play the top seed, and the final two teams will play.

Playoffs start in week 13 with week 16 being the Superbowl.

In addition to the playoffs, the team that scores the most points between weeks 13-17 will win an extra $20. Every team is eligible.

Payouts:

Superbowl Champion= $325

Runner Up= $200

Third Place= $120

Fourth Place= $75

Fifth and Sixth Place= $25

Bonus= Each conference winner will receive and extra $25

$5.00 from each teams entry fee will go toward the League Fund which includes the purchase of trophies, novelties, and other items. The commissioner will send out the League Fund which include the distribution of funds.

We decided to use Yahoo.com since it is free and pretty customizable.

We also decided to use real NFL team names as our team names.

These are the ground rules for our league. I am sure there are several glitches and flaws that we will come across, but I think all of the major rules are set in place and we will face the problems as they come.

By the way, I have the #2 overall pick. The person picking #1 is a Vikings fan and will no doubt be taking Adrian Peterson. I have 3 options, take Tomlinson. Take Steven Jackson, or trade the pick. I let everyone know right away that my pick can be had. I am leaning towards on offer in particular. I would give the #2 overall pick up for the #6 and a fourth round pick. I have had other offers, including the person who is picking #3 overall. He offered his 2nd and3rd round picks for the #2 overall. I have that one in the back of my mind only because I would the picks #22, #23, #26, and #27 which would be nice, but I am left without a pick until the 22nd overall pick and the guy picking #3 would have the #2 and #3 picks which doesn't bother me because he wouldn't have a pick until the 4th round or #46 overall.
